The Districts of Abuja in the Game in Abuja World: Frontline

Abuja World: Frontline is fiction, but its map is inspired by a real city. Abuja has been the capital of Nigeria since 1991, a planned city laid out in districts around the Three Arms Zone and the great granite dome of Aso Rock. The game turns seven of its best-known places into territories to fight for.

The story

In the game, four warlords have carved up the Federal Capital Territory while its people slept: Baba Sule's North Hawks, Iron Mike's Black Dune, Madam Koko's Red Lagoon and General Tunde's Sand Vipers. You start with your home district and a small army, and win the city back one territory at a time. Every territory you hold pays you tribute each day. None of this is real: no war, warlord or battle in the game took place.

The districts and their ground

The campaign has seven territories, and each is fought as "the Battle for" that place on a battlefield built to suggest the real one.

Jabi: your home

Jabi is known for Jabi Lake, one of the city's favourite places to relax. In the game it is your home ground, a lakeside with green banks and reeds, and the place every campaign starts from.

Kubwa: the expressway

Kubwa is one of Abuja's biggest satellite towns, joined to the city by a busy expressway. Its battle is fought along a wide highway with a concrete median, street lights, an overpass and wrecked cars.

Wuse: the market quarter

Wuse is home to one of the city's best-known markets. In the game it is a burnt-out market quarter on red earth, with rows of tin-roofed stalls, burnt buses and a market gate.

Garki: concrete city blocks

Garki was one of the first districts built in the new capital, full of offices, banks and shops. Its battle is fought among gutted office blocks on a street grid, where fights are close and cover is everywhere.

Gwagwalada: river country

Gwagwalada, a fast-growing town south-west of the city, is fought as river country: a river held at two bridges, with sandy banks and mango groves on either side.

Asokoro: under the great rock

Abuja is ringed by hills and inselbergs, the bare granite domes that rise out of the savanna. Aso Rock, behind Asokoro and the Three Arms Zone, is the most famous. Asokoro is fought on steep, rocky ground under great granite domes, with boulder fields that hide enemy snipers.

Samiza: the last stronghold

When the five districts are yours, the four warlords make their last stand together at Samiza, in a walled fortress on dark, burning hills. It is the final battle of the campaign, and it stays locked until you hold all five.

Why Abuja?

Most war games are set in places their players have never seen. Abuja World: Frontline puts the action in a city that millions of people know, and uses the real shape of its land, its hills, lake and farmland, to make each battle feel different. It is meant as a celebration of the city, not a prediction of anything.
