About Abuja World: Frontline

Abuja World: Frontline is a free 3D war strategy game that runs in a web browser. It is made independently in Nigeria and set in a fictional war for the districts of Abuja.

Tanks and infantry advancing in Abuja World: Frontline

What the game is

You lead an army of up to 30 soldiers and two tanks through a campaign of five districts and a final battle at Samiza, each fought on a battlefield of its own. You fight as a soldier in third or first person and command your squads from above. Battles have a moving front line, soldiers who use cover like real infantry, six kinds of weather, hostage rescues and enemy commanders to capture.

Why we made it

We wanted a war game that feels like the big console shooters but runs on the phones people actually own, with no download and no app store. Most players in Nigeria and across Africa play on mid-range Android phones with limited data, so the whole game is a small download built with its own lightweight 3D engine, and it is tuned to keep phones cool. Setting it in Abuja gives it a home that players recognise.

How it is built

The game is written in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a custom WebGL 2 engine. The soldier models and animations come from the free Quaternius character pack (CC0 licence). Accounts, saved progress and live multiplayer use Google Firebase, and the site is hosted on Cloudflare.

Free to play

Abuja World: Frontline is completely free. It is supported by advertising, including optional reward videos that you can choose to watch for bonus War Funds. There are no paid items that make one player stronger than another.

It's fiction

The districts are inspired by real places in Abuja, but the war, the four warlords, the factions and the battles are invented. The game shows fantasy combat between soldiers and vehicles with no blood or gore, and is meant for players aged 13 and over.
