Gwagwalada is a river crossing. A river cuts across the whole battlefield between your army and the enemy’s middle lines, with two concrete bridges, pale sand bars along the banks and big dark mango trees shading the shore.
The real Gwagwalada
Gwagwalada is a large town to the south-west of the city and the headquarters of one of the Federal Capital Territory’s six area councils. It is home to the main campus of the University of Abuja, and the country around it is crossed by streams and rivers. The game sets its battle on red earth beside the water.
The battlefield
The ground is red laterite with gentle hills. The river crosses the field after the second enemy line, winding as it goes, with sandy banks on both sides. You can wade across, but you are slow and exposed in the water. The two bridges are the fast routes over, and the enemy knows it. Mango trees line the banks and give shade and some cover.
How the enemy holds it
The enemy’s third line looks straight across the river, and its soldiers on the far bank fire on anyone crossing. The bridges are covered from both ends.
Tactics
- Don’t cross at a single point. Send squads over both bridges and wade the shallows between them at the same time.
- Clear the far bank with snipers and tanks from your side before you cross.
- Rhino’s Armour up is made for river crossings.
- Once over, use the mango trees and the bank itself as cover while your squads catch up.
Side missions
The hostages behind the third line are on the far bank, so you will have to cross to reach them. The commander leads the defence of sector C from just beyond the river.
